Ok I fired up the bike and somehow expected the same behaviour as leaving the airbox sidecover off on my DR. Hard idle and no pick up on the revs because of a too lean condition. Not so on the G. It idled completely normal and gave a nice sweet "murbling" sound. Left it standing for a few minutes to get it warmed up a little. Took my jacket/helmet and went for a ride.
First thing I noticed was a nice throaty snarl. Next thing was the engine pick up from low revs. Nearly too much in the rain, in second gear the rear wheel would simply spin if I gave it some throttle. Very rewarding! I could not find any downsides. no jerking, no bogging, no stalling no whatsoever. Just a very eager engine and a naughty snarl!
As I was afraid my enthousiasm was mostly fed by the inlet snarl, I changed back and forth between with and without the air filter cover. The wet roads were the deciding judge. With the air filter cover fitted I had a very good accelleration, just as I was used to of course. Without the airbox cover though, the rear wheel would simply spin if I janked the throttle. First I though I was fooling myself, but doing repeated roll-on tests proved to me the midrange and especially the throttle response had improved. I cannot tell if the pure horsepower have improved, but the eagerness, the willingnes to pick up at opening the throttle (and the willingnes to lift the front wheel!) has improved definately.
I talked to my BMW dealer and he assured me the airbox mod wouldn't do any harm as long as you weren't riding completely full throttle for a prolonged stretch. He's actually working on getting even more air in the engine he told me with the aid of twinair.
With this setup (airbox mod and 14 tooth front sprocket) I really like the bike and even on tarmac I think the bike is plenty strong enough. Nice fat low end and wheelies in second are nothing but a twist of the throttle. No clutch needed.
Just got back from the dyno and testing various air box configurations.
Max,....Your Butt Dyno was right on. Wish I had the electronic copy of the dyno chart, but I don't so here's short of it.
Stock the G650XChallenge with 500 miles did 42.80 rwhp/ 37.09 lb torque
With OEM Paper filter and intermediate snorkel cover removed 43.80 rwhp/ 38.13lb
With Foam Filter and intermediate snorkel cover removed 44.78 rwhp/ 39.61lb
So we squeezed 2hp and 2 1/2 lbs of torque out of the G6550X Challenge for $40 and a minor modification as described in MaxCool's posts earlier. The bike now has more of an evinrude outboard sound which will be overtaken by the Remus performance exhaust next week. The ride back from the Dyno I definitely noticed an improvement in throttle response and overall power across the curve as in both subsequent dyno runs showed an improvement across the board and smoothed out any dips or spikes. All in all a worth while investment of our time today!

Just letting it be, it has the ability to adjust for changes at partial open throttle aka cruise mode and these test were done with full throttle of course. Next week or the week after we look to dyno test with the remus and at that point we can us a gas analyzer to determine how the bike is really running
Wheelstriping?
Asociaal m.i.
