What are the major risks in Vietnam in 2014?

After more than 7 years in Vietnam, I’m still very impressed by the continual activities in all the major cities such Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. Even in the middle of the night, people are constructing buildings, cleaning the street or even selling stuffs. It’s like Vietnam never sleep.
With more than 42% of the population under 25 years old, Vietnam is preparing young generation at the challenging world economy. Vietnam’s development starts by the development of infrastructure, education and medical facilities.
Transportation
When I had arrived in Ho Chi Minh City, my first question was “why is there so many motorbikes in the street?”. The driver had answered with large smile “no, it’s just few motorbikes. It’s not the rush hour”.
This is a surprise for none, the traffic accident is the major risk in Vietnam.

With more than 36 million motorbikes and more than 2 million cars in Vietnam, it seems that the statistic mentions only the accident declared to the Authorities.
Even if the motor-vehicle insurance is compulsory, less than 20% of motorbike drivers buy insurance. Who will pay the medical expenses in case of bodily injuries?
Epidemic diseases
With more than 93.4 million people estimate on July 2014 in Vietnam, the medical facilities are the major concerned of Vietnamese authorities.

Even if the number of public hospital is arising, some people do not have access to medical treatment. With its needs on medical facilities and capacities, Vietnam had attracted several investors from Malaysia, Singapore, … But the medical cost in private facilities are often not affordable for large part of the population.
Even if insurance can the solution to get access to better medical treatment, Vietnamese are often rejecting this option for the below reasons:

Fire and explosion 2014
After 2 600 fires and explosions in 2013 in Vietnam, the situation had been improving in 2014.

But still several people were injured or died in 2014.
Although the Decree No. 130/2006/ND-CP stipulates that Fire and Explosion insurance is compulsory for corporate in Vetnam, a large number of corporate do not comply with the regulation.
For company with 2 billion VND assets, the annual premium is around 2.1 million VND. For such premium, you do not need to be worried about natural peril, theft, fire,….
