Doctor suspended for purportedly fleecing patients in Ho Chi Minh City

A doctor in Ho Chi Minh City has been discovered ripping off his patients after one of the victims’ family member chased him down with a knife in a hospital earlier this week.

A source close to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper confirmed on Saturday that the doctor, named N.L.M.T., has been suspended from work at the Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital in District 1 while his case is being validated. The situation caught public attention as T. was chased down by a knife-wielding man, who is the family member of a patient, at the facility on Thursday.

The infirmary’s board of directors then asked the doctor to write a report on the incident. In his report, T. admitted to receiving a total of VND9 million (US$387) from a patient named D., who had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, on two separate occasions. He also demanded and pocketed about VND20 million ($860) from two other patients. The doctor has worked at the Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital since 2012 and is said to have great expertise.

Tuoi Tre reporters contacted T. on Saturday but he refused to provide any further detail. “The hospital is in charge of answering the press about my case from now on. I am in no position to give any information,” he stated. According to Phu Chi Dung, director of the infirmary, a probe is being carried out to determine the total of money T. received from the patients.

T. is a lecturer at the Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine and has been in contract with the hospital, Dung continued, adding that the incident has also been notified to the university.

“The transactions were made in private between the doctor and patients, thus they were difficult monitor. We have advised all patients to follow the payment procedures at the infirmary’s counter to prevent this happening,” the director elaborated.

Aside from his suspension, T. has also been asked to return all of the money to his patients.

During an interview with Tuoi Tre, X., one of the victims, said he was only aware that he was a victim after the case was publicized.

X. is a farmer and has been seeking treatment for his five-year-old child at the hospital for a few months.

T. previously asked him to pay some VND7.5 million ($322.5) for a type of medicine, and about VND3 million ($129) for a health examination of his kid, X. recalled.

Vietnamese teenage girl runs project that brings light to the blind

At just 16 years old, while most girls her age were out roaming shopping malls or hanging out in parks, Penny, an eleventh grader at Saigon South International School, was choosing to spend her weekends working on a charity project aimed at helping the blind regain their sight.

Penny, whose real name is Pham Thien Tam, has spent the last few years waking up at 4:30 am each weekend morning to prepare for a long day with her mother and friends helping other at the Nguyen Trai Eye Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. The group’s project, named “See Again”, is aimed at raising funds for optic surgery expenses at the hospital so that needy patients are able to undergo the procedure free of charge.

The dream of light
Penny was first inspired to start See Again after volunteering at a cost-free optic surgery event held by the Ho Chi Minh City’s association for the poor. Almost immediately, the then ninth-grader knew she wanted to follow suit. “When they [the needy] removed their bandages and began to weep with joy as they saw daylight again, I was so happy!” Penny recalled.

Auto
Social charity and volunteering is somewhat of a tradition in Penny’s family, and the young girl had no problem handing over her pocket money in order to make even a small contribution to those in need. But after a year of donating small amount, Penny knew she needed to think bigger and decided to expand her charity.

An average cataract removal surgery costs roughly VND10-30 million (US$426.83-1280.5), but thanks to a group of doctors who volunteer to operate on needy patients free of charge, the price quells down to VND700,000 (US$29.88). Though the price drop is considerable, it still remains out of reach for many. After calculating the amount of money she had saved and adding it to the cash her relatives were willing to donate, Penny declared she would do her best to help cover the cost of 500 operations in 2018.

1380047

Penny. Photo: See Again Project

Her father, Pham Duc Trung Kien, who himself has spent the last 20 years helping blind students attend college, convinced his daughter to double her goal to 1,000. Determined, Penny began writing letters of appeal in both English and Vietnamese to everyone she knew, hoping at least a few would donate to her project.

During the fundraising process, The Vietnam Foundation helped connect Penny to a philanthropist who promised to double Penny’s fund, no matter how much she raised. Finally, after earning enough money to fund her project, Penny turned to her peers at school to help direct and maintain the project.

Every Sunday, the team gathers at Penny’s house to discuss their next moves and craft the handmade items they sell as part of their fundraising efforts. The project has since gone viral at her school. And their hard work has paid off.

Their humble starting goal of sponsoring 500 cataract surgeries was smashed when they exceeded their expectations and funded a whopping 2,2000 operations in 2018.

Hoping to keep up the momentum, the students at See Again have now set their sights on sponsoring 3,000 surgeries in 2019.

Future plans
Pham Thi Nam, 76, from the southern province of Long An, still recalls visiting Ho Chi Minh City in 2016 to have her left eye operated on with funding from the See Again project. “Vibrant life came back to me so quickly after the surgery,” she said. “Had I not received treatment that day, I would have been blind for good.”

Catriona Moran, the head teacher at Saigon South International School, remarked that she is proud of Penny and her friends for their social service. “I was there when they were drafting plans and preparing to launch the project,” Moran said. “I was really impressed at their positive outcome, as they not only deliver the sight back to the needy, but also shower society with love and care.”

Despite her group’s success, Penny underlined that the current issue she’s dealing with is how to maintain the project in the future. “Soon I will study abroad and my friends will graduate. Now, more than ever, we need to find aspiring underclassmen who are willing to take on the role,” she added.

Penny also revealed that after graduation she hopes to work towards becoming an ophthalmologist, a dream Penny has had since long before starting the See Again project.

Ever since Penny first found out that her father was suffering from an untreatable disease that will rob him of his eyesight and, the young student has been in a race to help as many people as she can who have been robbed of their sight.

To Penny, everything she’s done and everything she hopes to do is a way of ‘paying it forward’ and helping those in need. And she feels as if she was born to do it. Even her name, Penny, is in honor of a woman in Colorado who spent her lifetime helping countless people in need, including her father.

Bus driver fined $325 for running red light, almost causing fatal crash in Ho Chi Minh City

A bus runs a red light at an intersection in District 9, Ho Chi Minh City on March 17, 2019 in this still photo taken from dashcam footage uploaded on Facebook.

A bus driver who ran a red light in Ho Chi Minh City last week, forcing a truck on the opposing lane to make an emergency swerve that could have ended in a fatal accident, was on Friday slapped with a US$325 fine for his action.

Bus driver fined $325 for running red light, almost causing fatal crash in Ho Chi Minh City - Tuoi Tre News

B.v. schoonmaken in Vietnam Deel 2

Award-winning photo captured in Vietnam sparks controversy. accused of being staged

A photo shot in Vietnam showing an ethnic Hmong woman carrying her sons that won the top prize of the prestigious Hamdan International Photography Award (HIPA) is now at the center of a controversy among the global photography community as it appears to be staged.

Malaysian photographer Edwin Ong Wee Kee last week won the US$120,000 grand prize at the HIPA with a stunning portrait of the Hmong woman carrying two children, which he claimed to be able to luckily capture during a trip in northeastern Vietnam.

On the written congratulations to Ong, the HIPA said his award-winning photo “documented an intense humanitarian moment.” “The feelings of a Vietnamese mother whose speech disorder did not prevent her from feeling hopeful and evoking a sense of strength for her children.”

But one week after the award winner was named, Ong now faces controversy as his photo appears to be at least a little more planned or posed than being the result of an unexpected and “unplanned” moment as he described. A behind-the-scenes snap of the international prize-winning picture has revealed that the photograph was apparently staged.

The photo, first posted by photographer Ab Rashid, founder of Street Photo BD Magazine, purportedly shows a crowd of photographers gathered around the very mother and children that appear in Ong’s shot. Rashid alleges that a number of photos taken during this portrait session would look identical to the one that earned Ong the HIPA prize.

Etienne Bossot, a photography teacher and founder of Pics of Asia, a provider of small group photographic tours across Asia and especially Southeast Asia, then re-posted the behind-the-scene photo on the company’s website, headlining the post, “Are you doing it for photography or for fame?” “Another classic photo of a photography tour group gathered around one subject, shooting the same image from almost the same angle,” he wrote in the post. “The woman seems to pose for them, probably a staged model for the photographers who don’t want to have to work very hard for their pictures.”

1380985

A crowd of photographers apparently gather around the mother and her children at the same time as Ong in a behind-the-scenes photo uploaded on Pics of Asia.

Boring trend
Responding to an email from Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, Bossot criticized the trend where “so many people travel to Vietnam and take close up photos of children and old women.” “This is something everyone is doing, and so, in the end, we always see the same photos,” he underlined. “It has been 40 strong years that people come to Asia to take portraits of old ladies, and it becomes boring.”

According to Bossot, these types of situation are “mostly seen with groups of Asian photographers.” “It is very trendy nowadays for photographers to travel on tours that only stage images,” he said.“This guarantees that the guests go home with pretty images that they can submit to competitions.” “Most of them only want to feel pride by winning competitions. They are not interested in creativity, originality or telling the stories of the people they meet. They want pretty pictures for themselves,” Bossot criticized.

Not only international photographers like Bossot, insiders and experts in Vietnam’s photography industry have also taken to the Internet to express their disapproval and disappointment about the issue.

Edwin Ong Wee Kee and his controversial photo are like fuel added to the fire of the long-discussed controversy among professional photographers and photography enthusiasts over staged pictures being awarded big money.

However, it should be noted that Edwin Ong Wee Kee’s photo may not be deemed violation of the HIPA, given the fact that it is an international photography award, not a press photo contest, which often requires submissions of unplanned moment. Founded in 2011, HIPA boasts the largest monetary prize among photography awards in the world.

When contacted by Malaysian online newspaper The Star, Ong refuted Bossot's claims that the winning photo was staged and said that the photo was taken spontaneously. Ong said, "In this trip to Vietnam, we [the photographers] went to the rice field and there was a mother [who had her children with her] that passed by. "We then asked her whether we could take her photo of which she willingly sat down and allowed us to take her photo. "We never told her to stand up or sit down. Even after taking photos, she was still there and didn't move until we left," he said.

Ong also said that he submitted both the raw and edited files of the winning photo for the competition. "This is a very big competition where they [the judges] look at the original and edited photos. Only then a prize is given."

1383653

Essay: Hobbies

Via Minh.

Assignment: Some people believe that hobbies need to be difficult to be enjoyable.
To what extent do you agree or disagree? Write an essay of minimum 250 words.

Original Essay of Yên Triều, Grade 7 (13 year):

Everyone always have their own hobbies such as reading books, playing many sports and so on. Their hobbies are easy or difficult but it make they are exciting and happy. Therefore, I agree partly with the statement that hobbies need to be difficult to be enjoyable.

In my opinion, easy hobbies could also make people happy. Listening to music is very easy hobby. You just turn on the music songs on the radio, mobile phone or computers. And you just need to enjoy it. Like me, when I listening to music I will feel better. One example of an activity that is easy for most people is photograph. In my opinion, anyone can take interesting photos without knowing too much about the technique of using the camera. It come easy and fun to anyone. You only raised your camera, or the mobile phone and take some photos.

The difficult hobbies are sometimes more interesting. It requires our courage and perseverance to overcome challenges. For example, English is an important language to me and everyone. I have been learning English for three years and I know that it needs more determination and persistence. You should practice everyday, do English homework and speaking, listening English everyday. I have top study more and more, so that I will be able to reach my dream one day.

In short, some people believe that their hobbies are only through difficult activities, while others think they may feel happy when they do some simple things. In my opinion, doing easy or difficult things according to the hobbies.
